Retail Changes Increase Demand for Reach Trucks

The forklift truck industry is a multi-billion dollar business, with companies all over the globe needing these machines to help their operations run smoothly. This industry is one that is constantly on the rise, with BITA reporting a growth in warehouse truck sales of 15%. One particular increase has been in the reach truck sector, with the demand growing as more businesses utilise reach trucks for their warehouses.

Reach Forklift Trucks

The reach trucks are now very popular among retail businesses, as the picking and sorting methods used in their distribution centres are ideal environments for their high reach. Reach trucks can feature a reach height of up to 13 metres, but the downside of this particular feature is that visibility for the driver and, in turn, safety, becomes limited. An option provided by some manufacturers is tilting cabs, allowing the operator to have a clearer view of what he or she is picking, or alternatively, cameras fixed to the top of the forklift can have the same function.

As well as the height of reach being a sought-after feature of forklifts, speed of operation is now being given even more importance in retail environments, as businesses strive to meet delivery deadlines.

Increase in Demand

While the demand for these trucks has increased, the higher usage of reach trucks is also demanding of operators, too. It is very difficult to operate a forklift when you are trying to reach items that are 12 metres above ground, so those who are chosen to operate the trucks must have a certain degree of skill in order to do so. If the operator is to be able to use their skills properly, they must be assisted by equipment that is capable of consistent quality throughout usage. Manufacturers have worked hard to create reaching arms that have the same level of strength and stability from the lowest height to the highest, meaning that picking and moving items does not pose a risk to the safety of the operator.

Leading manufacturer Jungheinrich has focused on efficiency for their ETV 110 and 112 models, with tests showing that they consume up to 10% less energy than their predecessors. This doesn’t compromise their performance, either, with lift capacities of 1,200kg making them perfect for moving loads of all sizes.
