New Mirror Standards for HGVs Coming in July

In order for Euro 1 Training to provide the correct information to those enrolled on our courses, we keep a careful eye on changes in legislation that can affect not only the plant industry, but the training and health and safety information we provide. It is with this in mind that we bring you news of the new mirror standards that will be operating throughout Europe from July 2016.

Who will it effect?

As of July 2016, any newly registered HGV over 3.5 tonnes will require upgraded mirrors that abide by the new specifications. From then onwards, any 3.5 tonne HGV that renews its registration will also have to upgrade its mirrors. This system ensures that within 18 months, all HGVs will be updated with the legislated mirrors.

Why is it needed?

The new mirror standards were voted in by the European Commission in a bid to decrease the number of road collisions that HGVs are involved in, in particular the accidents involving cyclists. Last year alone, there were 115 cyclist fatalities in accidents involving HGVs, a shocking statistic that the Department for Transport thinks this proposal will help prevent recurring in future years.

How can I bring my HGV up to standard?

Currently, the UK standard requires a 2 metre field of vision, while the new requirement in July will be for a 4.5 metre field of vision. This requirement is performance based, and the requirement can be met by combining mirrors to provide the specified coverage, or by installing new, specialised mirrors.

What else can I do to reduce the risk of collisions?

This change in legislation is a significant start to reducing the risk of HGV collisions, but it is by no means enough. Additional precautions such as traffic-free cycle lanes and improved junction planning are currently being discussed to help separate HGVs and cyclists completely, however, it is also recommended that current and new HGV drivers undertake stringent training to make them more aware of the dangers of partial vision to cyclists, and improve their general road safety.
