Construction is a multi-billion pound industry worldwide. Every country is building and expanding their space in new and interesting ways, each one striving to construct a landmark or iconic structure and improve their skylines. With so much money invested into the industry, it is no surprise that we are seeing some amazing construction projects appearing. Yas Island

Covering more than 25 million square feet and with an estimated cost of over $40 billion, this man-made island in Abu Dhabi has been unfolding as a multi-staged project, with final phases set to be complete in 2018. The island hosts a Ferrari theme park, amongst many other attractions, that is the first of its kind.

Also located in Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island is an attempt to create the greatest cultural centre in the world. Covering 27 square kilometres and with an estimated cost of $26 billion, this colossal construction is expected to be completed by 2018. The island will be connected to Abu Dhabi by a rail system and a 10 kilometre highway, and will be divided into seven districts:

  • Cultural district – contains five cultural centers: The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, The Louvre Abu Dhabi, The Performing Arts Centre, The Sheikh Zayed National Museum and The Maritime Museum. This district will also contain exclusive villas, 7-star hotels, green areas and exclusive retailers.

Crossrail

Europe’s biggest construction process is currently the Crossrail. This development aims to transform transport in the UK capital, cutting journey times across the city. The development was undertaken in 2009 and, when completed, will serve 40 stations and an estimated 200 million passengers a year. The project received a £1 billion loan for initial construction and a further £500 million loan in 2013 to improve train quality and speed. This is the most ambitious transport construction project to be carried out in London in over 100 years and final construction stages are planned to be completed in 2018.
