Forklift Training with Virtual Reality (VR)

To ensure that forklift operators are fit for the job at hand, it is vital that they have undergone proper, thorough training. Thousands of workplace accidents occur every year, the results of which range from damaged products to fatalities. The vast majority of these accidents happen as a result of inadequate training and could have been prevented were the operators better prepared.

Most forklift operator training courses follow a similar structure with a balance between theoretical learning and practical, hands on experience. This is the way things have been done for a long time but now, with the advancement of technology, there’s another training option to consider: virtual reality (VR). So, how can VR be used in plant machinery training?

Virtual Reality (VR)

VR and forklift training

VR used in plant machinery training is a new and interesting development. Using a VR headset and specially designed training software, users can become immersed in a realistic forklift operating simulation. The best simulations involve a physical piece of kit which replicates forklift controls – including, for example, a steering wheel, levers and foot pedals – for the user to command, creating a realistic imitation of actual machinery. Superior to existing simulations, the addition of a VR headset creates an all-encompassing environment for the user to navigate.

Comprehensive training software will give users the opportunity to experience and deal with a wide variety of situations, all through the safety of a simulation. This can be ideal for giving trainees the chance to build up their confidence and familiarise themselves with controls and situations before stepping into real machinery. Alternatively, it could be used to train operators how to cope with dangerous circumstances which would be too hazardous to practice in real life.

Currently this type of training is not widespread, but the idea has promise and could very well go from being a niche extra to a widely used component of forklift training courses in years to come.

Benefits of using VR for training

There are many ways in which VR can enhance the forklift training process; some of its benefits include:

  • A useful middle ground between theoretical learning and real life forklift driving
  • Safer to put new trainees in a VR simulation first than to let them immediately drive a forklift
  • No risk of trainees harming others, themselves, machinery or stock
  • Can safely experience handling situations which would be too dangerous to recreate in the real world
  • Trainees can build their confidence before stepping into real machinery
  • Reports on the trainee’s performance in the simulation can be created and reviewed
  • Can be used to screen candidates for a job and build the skills of existing employees

We look forward to seeing this technology develop and find its way into plant machinery training courses across the world.
