Frequently asked training course questions

How often should you undergo forklift refresher training?

After completing forklift training there are no legal requirements to complete refresher training. However, forklift refresher training is highly recommended, so much so that a code of conduct suggests that operators who haven’t undertaken refresher training may be deemed responsible for any accidents or issues that occur.

With no legal requirements, however, there are no set rules for how often you should attend forklift refresher training. The general consensus is that attending refresher training every five years is enough to keep your knowledge up to date with changing regulations and advances in technology.

Do forklift licenses expire?

Many people often confuse the expiration of the National Operators Registration Scheme with the expiration of the RTITB forklift license. However, the license and certificate of basic training do not expire. Once you’ve received a forklift license you are entitled to operate a forklift without renewal but you are also expected to attend refresher training every five years.

How long is forklift training?

The duration of forklift training can vary depending on the number of trainees in a class. The ideal ratio of trainees to the instructor is 3:1, but this is not always the case and larger classes can take longer to complete. Typically, beginners forklift training is 5 days long.

What should you do if your forklift starts to tip over?

If you feel the forklift tipping over, do not attempt to jump out. You may be pinned under the forklift. Instead, stay in your seat, lean away from the direction that the forklift is tipping and ensure that you remain stable by keeping your hands firmly on the wheel.

What is the load centre of a forklift?

The load centre is the distance from the face of the forks to the centre of gravity of the load.

How often should operators inspect their forklift?

Operators should inspect their forklifts every day at the minimum.

What is my forklift’s load limit?

Different forklifts will have different load limits. Information for your specific forklift’s load limit can be found on its load capacity data plate. On this plate you should find: the load capacity, lift height, load centre distance, brand and model number.
